In recent years, we are seeing web accessibility standards and regulations being updated at a swift pace, both locally and globally. This means that we are seeing more and more recommendations and demands from relevant organisations asking us to adopt the necessary measures to make websites, and public sector websites in particular, comply with these standards and regulations.
September 2020 is the final deadline to meet these standards
On 26 October 2016 the European Union Directive 2016/2102 on the accessibility of websites and mobile apps of public sector bodies came into force. On 7 September 2018 this directive was transposed to Spanish legislation by way of Royal Decree 1112/2018. This new law focuses on removing existing barriers to accessibility and facilitating and ensuring that all citizens have access to technology, thereby enabling them to interact with public sector bodies. As for when it will come into effect, the Directive offers flexibility for Member States, requiring them to apply all provisions of the law to all new websites before 23 September 2019, and to all websites before 23 September 2020, which is just around the corner.
